Az dúzokkal és tournure-ökkel a női test hátsó részét formázták tovább 1871-től, habár a fél krinolin (vagy krinolinos szoknya) is divatozott még. Az alsószoknyák szerepe viszont megnőtt, nem véletlenül fektettek nagy hangsúlyt rájuk. Mindennek célja volt, a sok gyönyörű fodornak és dísznek, a zsinórozásnak és a keményítésnek is. Először is a fodrok azt a célt szolgálták, hogy súlyt adjanak a szoknyának, így ne gyűrődjön fel viselés közben valamint az uszályon a több sornyi nehéz fodor megakadályozta hogy csúnyán begyűrődjön a ruha alatt. Másodrészt a zsinórozás is azért kellett, hogy szabályos alakot kölcsönözzön az alsószoknyának, mivel a sima dúz már nem tartotta végig a ruhát, mint a régi abroncsok. A keményítés mindkét célt szolgálta.

Ahogy elkezdett a ruha szűkülni a csípőn úgy jelent meg az igény a karcsúbb alak eléréséhez is a hölgyek körében. Mivel a tournure abroncsait gyakran dupla rétegű tunika és puffos dúz-rész fedte, szükségtelenné vált a rengeteg alsószoknya használata s 1875-re néhány elhivatott hölgy odáig is elmerészkedett, hogy az illemszoknyán kívül nem is viselt rendes hosszú alsószoknyát. De hogy a rendes hölgyek becsületét megmentsék, magára a dúzra felgombolható alsószoknyákat készítettek vagy az alsószoknyába varrták bele az abroncsokat.

With the bustles and tournures the back side of the female figure was shaped on from 1871, tho' the half-crinoline (or crinoline skirt) was still fashionable. But the role of the petticoats grew, not by accident they layed the accent on these. Everything had it's purpose, all the glamorous flounces and trimmings, the cording and starching too. At first the flounces were ment to give weight to the skirt to prevent it from gathering up while wearing, also the several rows of pleats on the train to prevent it from wrinkling in ugly under the dress. Secondly cording was needed to give an even shape to the petticoat because the simple bustle didn't support the whole skirt as with the old hoop skirts. Starching was good for both purposes.

As the skirt started to get narrower on the hips the urge for the slim figure appeared among the ladies. Because the hoops of the tournure was covered by several layers of tunique and puffy bustle-back, the use for more petticoats had become needless and by 1875 some desperated ladies even ventured to not wear any proper long petticoat but only the modesty petticoat. But to save the reputation of the decent women, button-up petticoats were produced for the bustles, or the hoops were stitched inside of the petticoat.
